Trippin' the LIVEmines: CAMEO, Nasty Promo Midi-CD [1996]

Cameo is a funk/R&B band from New York formed in the late 70's. The group was fronted by Larry Blackmon whose nasal vocal style was once likened to "A robot talking with a mouthful of peanut butter" by a contemporary music critic. Still, with his unique vocal style, high top fade haircut, and sporting a codpiece over his pants, "Word Up" zoomed to the top ten of the US and UK charts in 1986.

Nasty is a live album released in 1996. This is the promotional CD containing 6 songs from the album. The "Mega-Mix" is a remix of the album's live tracks. Check out the live version of "Word Up"!!!

ROBERT PALMER, Live [2001]

Robert Palmer's soulful voice blended perfectly well with whatever style of music he recorded, be it rock, rhythm and blues, or reggae. While he had released solo albums in the 70's, it was when he joined The Power Station in the mid-80s that his career took a turn for the better. They scored two hit singles: "Some Like It Hot", and a cover of T-Rex's "Get It On (Bang A Gong)". With the newfound recognition, he released his solo album, "Riptide", in 1985. His music video for "Addicted to Love" featured beautiful women-- models clad in similar wardrobes with heavy make-up, dancing and acting as back-up musicians. It became a favorite among the MTV generation of the 80s and helped boost record sales of Riptide. Pepsi took notice of his MTV success and signed him up for a commercial in 1988 using his single "Simply Irresistible" (from the album "Heavy Nova") with the winning formula of his music videos, the sexy and beautiful models on the background.
In 2001, he released this album which contains a great selection of his known hits. Captured live in December 2000, at the legendary Apollo in New York City, the brilliant singer and songwriter dazzled his audience with his powerful voice along with his amazing band. Surely, with his demise in 2003, Mr. Palmer is terribly missed by his fans all over the globe.

DURAN DURAN, Acoustic World

In 1982, Duran Duran was catapulted to international fame with the tremendous airplay and support given by the then relatively new network MTV, to their music videos from the album "Rio". This lead to the re-release of their eponymous self-titled album, with the song "Is There Something I Should Know?", as an additional track in the U.S. The release of "Arena", recorded live around the world during their 1984 tour saw the group at their top form and at the highest peak of their popularity. Their performance at Live Aid (1985) would be their last performance as a quintet in the 1980s. Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor left the group leaving Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor to continue recording as Duran Duran. Warren Cucurullo, who was initially hired as a session guitarist, eventually became a full member later on. The later half of the 1980s saw the group's popularity waning as they veered away from their trademark sound. It seemed like downhill from that point on until they produced a surprise hit single in 1993. In the time when Grunge and Alternative Rock ruled the airwaves, they opted for an acoustic touch with the song "Ordinary World". It was included in their second self-titled album, more popularly known as "The Wedding Album". Obviously, a reference to the album cover that showed photos of the band's parents on their wedding day. The album was received with much praise from the music critics, most of whom considered Duran Duran's rise to fame had a lot more to do with their fashion sense than their music. The band's sound and songwriting was regarded to have achieved a higher level of maturity with their years in the business. Their newfound success in the early '90s, along with the rising popularity of the "unplugged" or acoustic format, led the band to perform in MTV's "Unplugged" Series. Thus, baring the backbone of Duran Duran’s music, much to the delight of the “not so old” and younger fans. The group embarked on a major world tour performing acoustic versions of their popular hits. It was in one of these events, that this bootleg CD, "Acoustic World", was recorded. This is a classic Duran Duran performance as there are no indications that they will be doing acoustic gigs in the near future. The set begins with "Hungry Like The Wolf" in a laid back manner initially, and later moving up the phase to that of the original version. The track "Serious", from their poorly received album "Liberty", is actually one of my favorites. It has a simple rhythm but has a groovy vibe to it.

In the span of their career, the first half of each decade saw them rising ("Rio"-"Arena" in the 80s, "Duran Duran [Wedding Album]" in the '90s, and "Astronaut" in 2003), then taking a stumble on the latter half. Is it just me, or their song "Falling Down"(2007) signaled another "massacre" of sorts, for the band, for the remaining part of this decade. Oh well, maybe we can look forward to a revitalized Duran Duran somewhere between the years 2011-2015 (LOL). Maybe they'd bring Warren back. I think he's one of the greatest guitar players of our time. Nonetheless, they still have their loyal fans out there who stick it out with them no matter what.

The LOTUS EATERS with RIVERMAYA, Live (2002)

In 2002, The Lotus Eaters had a live concert in Manila backed up by the Filipino alternative band, Rivermaya. Peter Coyle and Jeremy Kelly had high praises for the Pinoy band when interviewed by a VJ from MYX, a local music channel. Peter said that the members are good musicians and were able to grasp the new arrangements for their live set easily.









The set posted here is NOT their concert at the Rockwell Club Tent in Makati. This was their performance recorded for the MYX TV special.
